Q: What is Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation and why would someone have it done?
A: Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation is a surgical technique that strengthens the vaginal muscle tone and effectively decreases the internal and external diameters of the vagina. By recreating the tightness that was present prior to childbirth, LVR enhances sexual pleasure for a woman and her partner.

Q: What is Designer Laser Vaginoplasty? Why do women want to have this done?
A: Designer Laser Vaginoplasty is a group of cosmetic procedures that enhance and beautify the external vaginal structures. The most common of these procedures reduces the size of the Labia Minora (The inner vaginal lips). Some women have experienced trauma to these structures at the time of delivery that often make the Labia irregular. Other women were born with large labia. In either situation women may experience discomfort wearing certain types of clothes, or the may experience pain and irritation with intercourse, or they may be self-conscious about the appearance of these structures.

Q: Is this considered a cosmetic procedure or a medically necessary procedure?
A: Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation and Designer Laser Vaginoplasty are considered elective, cosmetic procedures and are not covered by insurance.

Q: How long does the surgery take?
A: The times will very depending on whether one procedure is being performed or a combination of procedures. Generally 60 to 120 minutes.

Q: How soon after the surgery can I return to work?
A: Depending on the type of work you do, most women can return to work within 5 to 10 days. Strenuous activity should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks in some cases.

Q: When can I resume sexual intercourse?
A: Generally this will be 6 weeks. The same is true for Tampon usage.

Q: Is this really painful surgery?
A: As with all surgery there will be some discomfort. However the techniques of the surgery minimize the discomfort. I use long acting local anesthetics that greatly reduce the amount of initial postoperative discomfort. Most women describe the pain as mild. We will provide you with appropriate pain medication for your comfort.

Q: I am considering other cosmetic surgery. Can LVR or DLV be done at the same time?
A: Yes. Both procedures can be done at the same time as other cosmetic surgery. We would simply need to coordinate time with your Plastic surgeon. In addition, it sometimes is possible to have other medically indicated gynecologic surgery at the same time.

Q: I have heard that this can cure urinary leakage. Is this true?
A: LVR can cure mild forms of Stress Incontinence. However, we would need to evaluate your individual situation to determine if another type of medically indicated procedure would be the best option.

Q: I am too embarrassed to discuss these problems. What should I do?
A: These problems, as well as your embarrassment, are very common concerns for women. As a gynecologist, I have heard this from countless women over the years. We now have solutions. Please, bring this to the attention of you gynecologist or health-care provider.

Q: I do not live in Knoxville. Can you make arrangements for out-of-town clients?
A: My office can certainly accommodate your situation. Depending on the procedure and your travel distance you may need to plan for 2-4 days in Knoxville.

Q: Is this new?
A: Great question! LVR was based on a fairly standard gynecologic procedure called Anterior and Posterior Repair. Many Gynecologists training after the late 1980’s have not had much experience with this basic procedure. In 1990, Dr. David Matlock combined the basic procedure with modern cosmetic surgical techniques and the improved healing power of the Laser to develop LVR/DLV. So the answer is no and yes.

Q: Are women who have not had children candidates?
A: We are all different. Because of anatomical variation some women experience these problems without having had children. They are candidates for LVR/DLV also.

Q: What type of anesthesia is used?
A: Most patients utilize general anesthesia but epidural anesthesia and local anesthetics can be options as well.

Q: Can Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation® be combined with designer laser vaginoplasty?
A: Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation® can be combined with designer laser vaginoplasty such as laser reduction labioplasty.

Q: Can Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation® or designer laser vaginoplasty be combined with other cosmetic surgical procedures?
A: Yes, our team of board certified gynecologist and plastic and reconstructive surgeons can combine Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation® or designer laser vaginoplasty with most cosmetic surgical procedures such as breast, nose, eye, or tummy tuck surgery.

Q: My inner vaginal lips (labia minora) are too long. Can I have them reduced?
A: The labia minora can be aesthetically sculptured to your specifications with laser reduction labioplasty.

Q: Do I have to be a patient of the practice to have any of these procedures?
A: I am happy to offer these services to any woman who feels they would benefit from Vaginal Rejuvenation or Designer Vaginoplasty.
